Why are Mendota fireplaces superior to other fireplaces?
Gas fireplaces are like other major appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, TVs, etc. There is a wide range of prices based on quality, performance and craftsmanship.
Mendota luxury fireplaces are custom built in limited numbers for the thoughtful buyer who is interested in something better and more unique than the "builder box" fireplaces that are installed in low cost housing, condos and apartments. Mendota uses only the finest materials including 18 gauge aluminized steel for outer casing, NeoCeram® glass and stainless steel burner systems. Mendota fireboxes are continuously seam welded.
Mendota fireplaces are certified ANSA/AGA safety tested, high efficiency wall furnaces. Mendota fireplaces have won "Best of Show" honors at the National Hearth Products Association Expo and have been listed as a "Best Buy" value for gas fireplaces by Consumer's Digest.

Why should I consider a Mendota fireplace?
The purchase of a gas fireplace deserves the same thoughtful consideration that you give to the purchase of a car or major appliance and, if you're building or remodeling, it's important that you help your builder pick a fireplace that compliments your home and your taste. Your home deserves something better and more unique than the "builder box' fireplaces used in low cost housing and apartments. Remember:
- A fireplace is a once in a lifetime purchase that's permanently installed in your home. It's not something that you replace every so often like a car or television.
- A fireplace is the center of attention in the most important room in your home. It's not in the kitchen or furnace room like other major appliances.
- A fireplace is a product from which you expect a high degree of performance and safety.

What is the difference between coaxial, collinear and natural venting for Mendota inserts?
Collinear and coaxial venting are both "direct vent" solutions. Direct vent draws combustion air from the outside of the structure. Collinear uses two 4" flex connecters. The first flex pipe runs to the top of the flue, the second flex pipe is installed into the damper area. Coaxial uses a 4" flex connector inside of a 6" flex connector. In most cases the collinear vent kit will work. However, with some smaller flues there is not enough room for two 4" flex pipes and the coaxial kit will be a better choice. Due to the problematic nature of top vent style units, the natural vent (B-Vent) kit should only be used as a last resort. For instance, if you have a large stone slab on top of the chimney that will not allow room for a direct vent cap.

How large of a fireplace do I need?
Today's Mendota gas fireplaces are very efficient. In older homes, plan for between 5 and 6 BTUs per cubic foot of air space being heated. In newer homes with tighter construction, plan for about 4 BTUs. However, other factors may change the amount of space each model is capable of heating. For example, additional factors that may affect the heating capacity of each model include the insulation R-rating of your home, the number and size of windows and types of windows in your home, vaulted ceiling versus flat ceilings, narrow hallways between rooms and outside temperatures.

Will my Mendota fireplace operate during an electrical outage?
Yes. Because the fireplace works on an internal millivolt generator the burner will run during power outages and will provide a reliable source of heat when your house furnace is not operating.

Can I rearrange the logs in my Mendota gas fireplace?
No. Placement of the logs is critical to the operation and performance of the fireplace. Misarranged logs can result in operational problems. If you notice the logs have been moved during cleaning, contact a Mendota service person and check your installation and operating instructions for proper placement.

Why do I have blue flames?
This is a result of normal 'start up' operation. The flames will begin to yellow after the fireplace is allowed to burn for about 30 minutes.

Is it okay to burn wood or other materials inside a Mendota gas fireplace?
No. No other materials may be burned inside a Mendota gas fireplace. The Mendota gas fireplace is designed and certified by UL specifically to burn only LP or Natural Gas. Burning wood has a much higher peak temperature that can not only permanently impair the fireplace itself, but also provide a real fire danger to your home and occupants. Even something as simple as burning paper can harm the fireplace's internal controls and possibly overheat and break the glass.

How do Mendota gas fireplaces vent?
All of Mendota's gas fireplaces and inserts are direct vent (DV). This means they have a fixed glass front which seals the gas burner and combustion firebox off from your home. 100% of the combustion air used by the fireplace comes from outside the home through a coaxial pipe. A smaller pipe inside the larger pipe exhausts all combustible gases, maintaining high indoor air quality. The vent can be run horizontally through an outside wall, or vertically through the roof, depending on your preference. Maximum and minimum lengths of runs of vent pipe are provided in your Mendota installation manual. You can download a copy of the manual from http://www.mendotahearth.com/mendota-manuals.asp

How much gas does the pilot light use?
This will vary by region, by gas utility and by fuel type. The pilot consumes approximately 1200 BTU's an hour. Your monthly gas bill should include your exact cost per therm (100,000 BTU's). Based on this rate, you can calculate the cost for your area.

Can I shut the pilot off in the summer?
Yes, or you can safely leave it burning. The pilot helps keep the moisture from inside the firebox, which is caused from the humidity in the air. It also will extend the life of the thermopile and thermocouple when the pilot is left on. It also keeps insects out of the burner tubes.

Is "Direct Vent" the same thing as "Ventless" or "Ventfree" or "Unvented"?
No. Direct vent fireplaces use a sealed glass front to completely isolate combustion gases and moisture from your home. This is especially important in new construction homes that are built very tightly to comply with today's energy codes. Ventless, ventfree or unvented fireplaces are designed to expel combustion gases and moisture directly back into the room. Ventless, ventfree or unvented fireplaces and stoves are illegal in many states and municipalities.

I live in a warm climate and I don't want heat. What are my options?
Too much heat can sometimes be an issue even in colder climates. Mendota fireplaces have extremely wide range temperature "turn down" (over 80%), and Mendota fireplaces are designed to faithfully re-create the look and feel of a wood fire at all temperature settings. At the turn of a dial, your Mendota can provide everything from a roaring, flame-filled fireplace with lots of forced air heat on cold winter nights to the romantic slowly burning and glowing logs of a late night campfire with gentle warmth on mild days.
